Leaving For A Trip? Your Checklist To Prevent Water Damage and Flooding

At Action Restoration and Property Services, we specialize in helping homeowners recover from water damage and mold remediation. Still, we firmly believe that prevention is the best tool in the recovery process.

Summer is quickly approaching and, with it, the desire to get out and explore all the great things that the Front Range and beyond have to offer. If you're packing up your camper to hit the road this summer, there are a few things you can do to help keep your home safe from flooding and water damage in your absence.

At Action Restoration and Property Services, we specialize in helping homeowners recover from water damage and mold remediation. Still, we firmly believe that prevention is the best tool in the recovery process. Join us in today's post as our water experts share some tips to prevent damage while you're away.

#1. Out of Sight, Never Out of Mind - Have Someone Check In

No one wants to be preoccupied with worrying about their house while they are away enjoying their vacation. Taking precautions with the steps we mention here is a great way to be proactive and reduce the chances of a soggy return home. Our first tip is to have someone you trust to check in on your house every few days. Something as subtle as asking a neighbor to stop by and water your plants or asking a friend to pop in and assess things real quick can help reduce the effects of normal functioning gone awry - including HVAC, plumbing, and abandoned messes that attract the wrong crowd. If you don’t have someone stopping by regularly, consider asking someone to stop by after big storms.

#2. Prepare Your Home

Along with packing your bags, there are a few things you should do around the house to prevent flooding and reduce the chances of sustaining water damage. Follow this helpful checklist:

  • Tighten all outdoor hose bibs and disconnect hoses
  • If feasible, cut off the main water supply to the house
  • Turn off your refrigerator's automatic ice maker
  • Turn off and/or unplug the washer and dishwasher
  • Set your water heater to the lowest heat setting
  • Check all faucets and drains to ensure there are no leaks
  • Fix any leaks promptly!
  • Check on your sump pump to ensure it’s working
  • Have your roof and foundation inspected if it’s been a few years since they last were
  • Double-check that all windows are completely closed and locked

#3. Enlist Professional Assistance

It’s never a bad idea to have the professionals come to take a look at something you’re concerned about. Remember that a roofer does not need to enter your home and can come to assess your roof while you’re traveling. This is a good idea after a bad summer hail storm in the Front Range.

When you return home, if you suspect mold growth or water damage, the experts at Action Restoration are more than happy to come to take a look. If we don’t find anything, then you have the peace of mind that your prevention steps worked and you’re living in a safe home. If we do find anything, we can quickly make the necessary repairs to prevent further damage.
